Along with understanding many circumstances of foreign policy as a five-star General during World War II, Eisenhower also brought the characteristic of respect for others during his Presidency. It is not so much that he compromised with opposition but rather that he never let his personal views get in the way of what he believe was best for his country. At times, his cautious stances on domestic and foreign policy was actually a good thing because it ensured the the 1950's would be a "quiet decade."
